She became a founding member of Assiniboia & District Arts Council in 1981, and was awarded the OSAC Life Membership Award in 2012. Involvement in culture had become her passion!

Even before construction of the Shurniak Art Gallery had begun, Joanne became an informal advisor to Bill Shurniak about the local community. Upon its opening in 2005, Joanne served as Office Manager of the Assiniboia Arts Council office, located within, and arranged all volunteers for the gallery. Joanne represented AAC on the Shurniak Board of Directors from 2005 to 2020.

Joanne Weiss was an outstanding volunteer in the arts community in Saskatchewan.
In earlier years, she actively supported many diverse organizations.

Joanne’s contributions to the gallery were innumerable. We acknowledge her daily assistance, careful organizing, generous nature, and genuine friendship. Joanne was recognized as a Lifetime Member of Shurniak Art Gallery in 2017. She did indeed make a difference! Thank you Joanne!
